Craig Hayden is an Assistant Professor in the School of International Service at American University. Craig’s research focuses on the policy discourse of public diplomacy, the rhetoric of foreign policy related to media technologies, and the role of media representation in international relations. He is a Research Fellow at the USC Center on Public Diplomacy, and is the author of The Rhetoric of Soft Power: Public Diplomacy in Global Contexts (Lexington Books, 2011). The diversity of activities labelled as public diplomacy obviates the need for a “theory” of public diplomacy. Investigations should instead examine how it offers new sites of inquiry.
