Guy D. Middleton is a Project Associate Professor in the Center for Global Communication Strategies at the University of Tokyo. His work on collapse includes the monograph The Collapse of Palatial Society in Late Bronze Age Greece and the Postpalatial Period (2010) and a review article on collapse for the Journal of Archaeological Research (2012). He is currently working on a book about collapse for Oxford University Press, on which this short essay is based.
