Author profile: Jussi Pakkasvirta and Hanna Tuominen

Jussi Pakkasvirta is a historian and professor of Area and Cultural Studies at the University of Helsinki. He has a long experience in research of Latin American history, culture and politics, and theories of nationalism. Pakkasvirta was the President of CEISAL, the European Council for Social Research on Latin America, from 2016 to 2019. His latest research projects have analyzed Finnish-Russian relations and Nordic-Spanish relations during the Cold War. He has written and edited fourteen monographs and published in journals such as Nations and Nationalism, Cooperation and Conflict and Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. His other research interests are interdisciplinary methodologies, environmental conflicts, and the culture of social media.

Hanna Tuominen is a university lecturer and Director of the master’s programme in European and Nordic studies at the University of Helsinki. Her research has focused on the values of the European Union (human rights, rule of law), Finnish and EU foreign policy, and EU-UN relations. Her latest research projects have analysed Finnish UN politics and the role and relevance of values in the EU. She has published articles in various academic journals including The Journal of Common Market Studies, The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, The Nordic Journal of Human Rights and Cooperation and Conflict.
