Author profile: Tiago Alves de Moraes Sarmento

Tiago Alves de Moraes Sarmento is a doctoral student of psychoanalytical theory at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). His main line of work focuses on Freudian psychoanalysis—with special regard to the Unheimlich (the uncanny), psychic reality and neurotic fantasy—and the relationship between the hero/superhero persona and subjectivity. Although the author has written extensively on superheroes and the media, his main concerns are about the superhero genre in cinema and its affect on the subject. His research also includes the analysis of CGI and animatronics characters in movies such as Ted, The Ninja Turtles, Star Wars and Hulk; group psychology and Baudrillard’s simulacra in V for Vendetta; and Freud’s theory about humour in fan-fiction and gender-bending cosplays.
