There are important ethical, political and legal concerns with military contracting. The most serious of these is the fear that it will lead to a democratic deficit.
The existence of ethnic minority insurgencies will not bring about the collapse of the government. Nor will they have a decisive impact on other aspects of Burma’s reforms or on the decisions of outsiders to work with a reformed Burmese government.
South Africa’s general election which was held on April 22 has yielded the proverbial ‘win-win’ situation for all the participants except the tiny parties, who failed to impress voters and whose futures now hang in the balance. Although this outcome-and the peaceful and well-organised poll-augur well for democracy in the former apartheid state, many still believe that the country’s fifteen year-old democracy may be in peril.
The Apollo Space program left an important legacy to both the US nation and the proponents of space exploration. This legacy is vast, going far beyond the political goals for which the project was created.

The main body of the essay focuses on Palestinians in Israel since 1948 as a key example of an indigenous involuntary minority. I take a historical approach here so as to render the utilization of exclusionary mechanisms over a long time period. Black Americans who were brought to the U.S. as slaves (Ogbu, 1998:166) and refugees/asylum seekers in Britain are then drawn upon in turn as examples to depict the mechanisms through which migrant involuntary minorities are socially, politically and economically excluded. The focal point of the latter part of the essay will be based on the media as a key modern mechanism of exclusion, particularly for migrant involuntary minorities, concluding with the argument that the growth and force of the media will only strengthen the exclusion of involuntary minorities, meanwhile enforcing the effects of the other mechanisms discussed.
There seems to be an enduring inability to understand that Africa is modernizing in its own way. The Western development discourse remains authoritarian and coercive.
There was never sufficient political will for an independent European security identity to be pursued in the early years of the Cold War. European states actively put their trust in the United States to act as guarantor for the continent.
Modern democracies have many lessons to learn from history about how religion can be treacherous. But the temptation to ban traditional religion from democratic politics will not ultimately serve democratic purposes.
