The 2014 remake of ‘Robocop’ presents lots of interesting talking points for those in the IR community such as the debate over a US war with Iran & the use of killer robots.
It is strange that we vest in a piece of machinery the moral blame that belongs to humans, and alarming that faith in technology and the power of numbers is leading us down a dangerous path.
The spectre of Killer Robots is haunting the world. However, it is by no means clear what they are. Humans have not needed much persuasion to kill. Are robots really any worse?
It is best to internationally limit the uses and capabilities of autonomous weapons outside war zones (e.g. domestic counterterrorism and police uses) and especially with respect to offensive roles.
Killer Robots are on the march, to use a military metaphor, and there is no going back. They are coming to a theatre of war near you, and they may arrive sooner than expected. Welcome to the future.
